EMCORE claims first-to-market 10-Gigabit LRM SFP+ module

MARCH 29, 2007 -- EMCORE Corp. (search for EMCORE), a provider of compound semiconductor-based components and subsystems for the broadband, fiber-optic, satellite, and solar power markets, has announced the live demonstration and subsequent release to sampling of its 10GBase-LRM (long-reach multimode) SFP+ optical transceiver module. The new model ERM-7800-SFP will be demonstrated to selected customers at OFC/NFOEC 2007 in Anaheim, CA.

The company introduced the ERM-7800-SFP product to expand its 10-Gigabit Ethernet (10GbE) product portfolio into additional market niches and platforms. The 10GBase-LRM SFP+ supports up to 220 m over legacy multimode fiber.

"[We] are excited about expanding our product portfolio to support electronic dispersion compensation for extended reach on multimode fiber under the IEEE 10GBase-LRM standard," comments John Dallesasse, director of transceiver development at EMCORE's Fiber Optics Division. "This product exploits our strong internal 1,300-nm emitter and detector technologies while maintaining a robust multisourcing strategy. Customers with legacy multimode fiber now have an option for migrating to 10-Gigabit Ethernet in the high-density SFP+ format."

The ERM-7800-SFP is a multimode optical transceiver module for 10GbE based on a low-cost Fabry-Perot emitter. The SFP+ module has a linear receive path to enable the use of electronic dispersion compensation (EDC) in support of the IEEE 802.3aq standard for extended reach on multimode fiber.

The transceiver operates over a wide temperature range (0° to 70°C; case) in the SFP+ form factor to enable high port densities for 10-Gbit/sec systems. The module features less than 1.5 W of power consumption and is fully compliant with the SFP+ MSA and the IEEE 802.3aq LRM standard. It is also compliant with the European Union's RoHS 6 requirements.

"The emerging 10GbE market is expected to grow to over 3 million ports by 2010," says Tom Tumolillo, Jr., LRM components product manager at EMCORE's Fiber Optics Division. "With market adoption beginning in 2007, the share of LRM modules consumed for 10GbE is expected to grow from 10% to 40% by 2010. We look forward to supporting this development with our LRM SFP+ module," he adds.

The company expects to begin sampling a companion product, the DFB-based ELR-7400-SFP for 10GBase-LR, in both linear and limiting receiver options in 2Q07.
