April 26, 2006 Cork, Ireland -- Firecomms says its EDL300 series of Fast Ethernet fiber-optic transceivers (FOTs) are designed to provide Fast Ethernet communication links over plastic optical fiber (POF), which the company calls a low-cost optical alternative to copper cabling.

April 26, 2006 Cork, Ireland -- Firecomms has released an integrated 650-nm fiber-optic transceiver (FOT) based on the company's proprietary Resonant Cavity LED (RCLED) technology, along with a "highly sensitive" receiver FOT that operates with IEEE 802.3u Fast Ethernet data communications networks.

The company says its EDL300 series of Fast Ethernet FOTs are designed to provide Fast Ethernet communication links over plastic optical fiber (POF), which the company calls a low-cost optical alternative to copper cabling.

The company says its Fast Ethernet FOT is rated for modulation of 250 Mbit/sec, and is ideal for 100-Mbit Ethernet transmission; for integration into Ethernet hubs, the device is compatible with Current-Mode Logic (CML) differential voltage swing levels.

"Our FOT is a perfect drop-in solution for emerging set-top box and other high bandwidth applications, like the triple play of voice, video, and Internet services over a single broadband connection in home networks," says Declan O'Mahoney, CEO of Firecomms.

According to the company, the Fast Ethernet FOT provides a simpler interface to an Ethernet PHY than previously available, and is designed for use with ultra low-cost connectors. These features combine to significantly reduce the cost per node for applications including home, office, and industrial Ethernet networks, contends the company.

The EDL300 series Fast Ethernet FOTs are currently shipping in volume quantities.
