Source Photonics unveils QSFP28 optical transceiver for 100GBase-LR4

Source Photonics says it will demonstrate a 100GBase-LR4 optical transceiver in the QSFP28 form factor at OFC 2014 in Booth 703. The company says the device has a typical power consumption of 3.5 W, a 40% lower figure than supported by the CFP4 form factor. It offers a faceplate density improvement of 150% versus 40G QSFP devices as well.

Source Photonics says it will demonstrate a 100GBase-LR4 optical transceiver in the QSFP28 form factor at OFC 2014 in Booth 703. The company says the device has a typical power consumption of 3.5 W, a 40% lower figure than supported by the CFP4 form factor. It offers a faceplate density improvement of 150% versus 40G QSFP devices as well.

The company also points out that the QSFP28 form factor enables up to 48 modules per standard face plate, 4X the amount that CFP2 transceivers will support.

The optical transceiver leverages a significantly integrated design based on Source Photonics’ internally developed and manufactured component technologies. These include the high-bandwidth laser sources and optical sub-assemblies that enable what Source Photonics asserts is industry-leading power consumption.

Source Photonics says it is working closely with system-level partners to optimize performance ahead of sampling the QSFP28 transceivers in mid-2014. The company expects the optical modules to find use in data centers to connect rack switches to the core of the network.
