Stratos Lightwave introduces copper-to-optical conversion links

Feb. 20, 2001--Stratos Lightwave LLC introduces its new family of Small Form Factor (SFF) copper-to-optical conversion links. These are SFF versions of conventional Media Interface Adapters (MIAs), and are plug-in devices for converting communication ports originally intended for copper cable to ports ready to use fiber optic cable.

These are SFF versions of conventional Media Interface Adapters (MIAs), and are plug-in devices for converting communication ports originally intended for copper cable to ports ready to use fiber optic cable. The new Stratos MHSDC Series dramatically extends the maximum allowable communication distance from 50 meters (with copper cable) to as far as 10 km (with fiber optic cable), while also providing all of the other benefits of fiber optic connections. These products are high-performance, fully integrated duplex data links for bi-directional communication in Fibre Channel and other datacom applications.

Stratos Lightwave's MHSDC Series uses a HSSDC copper interface on the host side and a LC fiber optic interface on the other. Conventional MIAs use the larger DB-9 copper interface on the host side and a larger SC fiber optic interface on the other. Because of their reduced size, the Stratos MHSDC Series does not protrude as far behind equipment, so they are less likely to cause mechanical interference.

These new SFF copper-to-optical conversion links are available in both short- and long-wavelength versions. The short-wavelength versions operate at 850nm, and offer multimode operation distances of at least 550 meters with 50 micron fiber optic cable (300 meters minimum with 62.5 micron cable). The long-wavelength versions offer single-mode operation at 1300nm for minimum transmission distances of 10km with 9.0 micron cable. Both the short- and long-wavelength products are available in 1.0625 or 2.125Gb/sec data rates, and are available in both 3.3- and 5-volt versions.

All Stratos MHSDC family members are hot-pluggable: they can be plugged and un-plugged from systems which are under power and in operation. Also, all are UL 1950 listed and comply with FDA Radiation Performance Standards, 21 CFR, Chapter 1, Subchapter J and IEC825-1.A
