Finisar supplies first small form-factor pluggable optical transceiver

3/24/00 Finisar Corp. (Sunnyvale, CA) has delivered its first small form-factor pluggable (SFP) optical transceivers. The first of the 1.25 Gbit/sec transceivers have been delivered to a provider of Gigabit Ethernet switches, coinciding with the company's demonstration of a 2.125 Gbit/sec version of the SFP optical transceiver to a second company, a maker of Fibre Channel switches.

3/24/00 Finisar Corp. (Sunnyvale, CA) has delivered its first small form-factor pluggable (SFP) optical transceivers. The first of the 1.25 Gbit/sec transceivers have been delivered to a provider of Gigabit Ethernet switches, coinciding with the company's demonstration of a 2.125 Gbit/sec version of the SFP optical transceiver to a second company, a maker of Fibre Channel switches. The transceivers are fully compliant with all published portions of the SFP Multisource Agreement, in which Finisar has been an active participant. They are also compliant with both the Gigabit Ethernet and Fibre Channel standards.

Occupying less than half of the board space of their GBIC predecessors, the transceivers allow networking equipment manufacturers to double port density in data communication systems while minimizing electromagnetic interference. The SFP transceiver modules are built with a fully metallic enclosure to ensure emission control and meet FCC test margins.

Additionally, each Finisar optical transceiver has built-in Serial ID capabilities, providing the user with information on the module's supported link length, standard interfaces, part number, manufacturer, and other parameters through a two-wire serial interface.
