Algar Telecom adds 100-Gbps transmission via Menara Networks CFP optical transceivers

Oct. 24, 2016
Optical transceiver vendor Menara Networks, a wholly owned subsidiary of IPG Photonics Corp., says it has delivered its full C-Band tunable 100-Gbps CFP optical transceivers to Algar Telecom. The Brazilian provider of video, data, voice, and mobile services has used the optical modules to upgrade its IP over DWDM fiber-optic network in the São Paulo metro area and other Brazilian markets.

Optical transceiver vendor Menara Networks, a wholly owned subsidiary of IPG Photonics Corp. (see "IPG Photonics to enter optical pluggable module market with Menara Networks acquisition"), says it has delivered its full C-Band tunable 100-Gbps CFP optical transceivers to Algar Telecom. The Brazilian provider of video, data, voice, and mobile services has used the optical modules to upgrade its IP over DWDM fiber-optic network in the São Paulo metro area and other Brazilian markets.

Algar Telecom serves residential, business, and carrier customers in central and southern Brazil. It operates more than 19,000 miles of fiber-optic infrastructure and serves 1.3 million customers in the states of São Paulo, Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro, Goiás, Mato Grosso do Sul, Parana, Santa Catarina, and Rio Grande do Sul, as well as the Federal District.

"Upgrading our core network to 100 Gbps was seamless and surprisingly simple using Menara Networks DWDM 100-Gbps CFPs," according to Melissa Kfouri Marino, IT director at Algar Telecom. "After considering competing DWDM 100-Gbps offers we selected Menara's solution because it was the only one that did not require the installation of a separate transponder shelf, which afforded us significant space and power savings. We now have a proven blueprint to roll out 100 Gbps to other Brazilian markets and give our customers the performance edge they need."

Menara says its DWDM 100-Gbps optical modules are optimized for data center interconnect and metro applications (see "Menara Networks offers tunable metro DWDM CFP"). "Our DWDM 100-Gbps solution is seamlessly deployable over existing 10G DWDM infrastructure, affording tremendous cost savings and faster service velocity to our customers," asserts Siraj Nour ElAhmadi, Menara Networks' general manager. "The DWDM CFP is 100% MSA compliant and is compatible with all MSA major routers and switches."
