Oclaro demos 28-Gbps SFP optical transceiver for 32GFC, 25GbE

March 24, 2015
Optical components and subsystem specialist Oclaro, Inc. (NASDAQ: OCLR) is showing off at OFC in Los Angeles what the company asserts is the first SFP28-LR optical transceiver that can transmit 28 Gbps to 10 km at a power consumption of approximately 1 W. The company expects the optical module to address the emerging Gen 6 (32GFC) Fibre Channel market as well as future 25 Gigabit Ethernet applications.

The demonstration at OFC features prototypes of the SFP28-LR transceiver. Oclaro says it expects to offer samples of the module in the second half of 2015, with a production release scheduled for early 2016.

The SFP28-LR transceiver is SFF-8432 compliant and will support data rates of 25.78125 Gbps (for 25GbE) and 28.05 Gbps (for 32GFC). Oclaro says the device will exhibit a BER of <10-6 and operate in C-Temp environments.

"We see initial demand for 32G Fibre Channel materializing in early 2016, and a large portion of the revenue will be in the single-mode segment," commented Vladimir Kozlov, founder and CEO of LightCounting Market Research, via an Oclaro press release. "In addition, we are expecting demand for data rates above 10 Gbps in next-generation applications such as wireless or 25G Ethernet, once these become standardized."
