Source Photonics unveils 25G/50G PON transceivers at ECOC 2022

The OLT devices leverage the company’s high-power optical EML chips and electrical IC chipsets to support downstream speeds of up to 50 Gbps and upstream speeds of up to 25 Gbps.

Source Photonics used last week’s ECOC 2022 event in Basel, Switzerland, to unveil a line of 25G and 50G PON optical line terminal (OLT) and optical network unit (ONU) optical transceivers. The OLT devices leverage the company’s high-power optical EML chips and electrical IC chipsets to support downstream speeds of up to 50 Gbps and upstream speeds of up to 25 Gbps.

The company says it has developed a 50G SOA integrated EML that can operate at 1342 nm and applied it to the design of 50G PON OLT transmitter. The resulting 50G PON OLT N1/C+ QSFP28 transceiver features SC/UPC for bi-direction transmission. Downstream optical and electrical speeds are 49.7664 Gbps NRZ and 2x24.8832 Gbps NRZ respectively; upstream optical speed is 24.8832 Gbps with burst mode reception. The proprietary transmitter can produce a wavelength range at 1340 to 1344 nm, with a launch power of over +8 dBm.

The 25G SOA integrated EMLs operate at 1358 nm for 25G PON OLT requirements. The 25G PON OLT N1/N2 transceivers come in a SFP28 form factor with SC/UPC for bi-direction transmission. Downstream optical and electrical speeds are both 25.78125 Gbps NRZ; upstream optical speed is 25.78125 Gbps with burst mode reception. The transmitter can accommodate a wavelength range of 1356 to 1360 nm and a launch power of over +6.1 dBm.

Initial product evaluation and qualification for 25G/50G PON OLT samples are already underway, Source Photonics states.

“Omdia is forecasting uptake of both 25G PON and 50G PON,” stated Julie Kunstler, chief analyst at Omdia, via a Source Photonics press release. “Initial deployments of 25G PON are underway, supporting high-end residential, business, and enterprise services; xHaul transport; and smart city applications. Omdia is forecasting initial deployments of 50G PON in late 2023. PON technology has been widely deployed around the world by different types of operators, with strategies ranging from FTTH to converged access networks. The PON component and equipment market is robust, supporting a variety of upgrade strategies meeting different operator requirements.”
