Open XR Forum completes coherent optical pluggable transceiver specifications

June 30, 2022
The Open XR Management Architecture, the forum’s first specification, addresses the disaggregation of the management of Open XR-compliant pluggable transceivers from host devices.

The Open XR Forum has approved a specification pertaining to network management of pluggable coherent optical transceivers. The Open XR Management Architecture sets the framework for managing coherent optical engines and features as they are deployed in routers, servers, and mobile radios, according to the organization.

The Open XR Management Architecture, the forum’s first specification, addresses the disaggregation of the management of Open XR-compliant pluggable transceivers from host devices. However, the management framework could apply to other coherent optical modules as well, the organization asserts. The clear delineation of transport and IP management functions should help enable widespread deployment of IP over DWDM as well as the use of point-to-multipoint optics closer to the network edge, the Open XR Forum adds.

“Open XR Management Architecture,” can be downloaded from the Open XR Forum website under “Documents.” The Open XR Forum, launched in mid-2021, comprises network operators and technology vendors interested in facilitating the use of point-to-multipoint coherent optics (such as Infinera’s XR optics) as well as point-to-point varieties.
