Huawei unveils 800G tunable optical module

Huawei has launched what the company asserts is the first 800G tunable optical module. The module should help support the capacity demands 5G networks will require, according to Huawei.

The module will operate at rates from 200 to 800 Gbps. When paired with appropriate DWDM systems, the modules will enable operators to transmit as much as 48 Tbps on a single fiber. The modules leverage Huawei's channel-matched shaping (CMS) algorithm to balance reach and transmission rate, enabling what the company asserts is 20% more transmission distance than would be possible without it.

Huawei says it will deployment module in its OptiXtrans portfolio of optical transport systems (see, for example, "Etisalat, Huawei test OSN 9800 P32C optical cross-connect platform"). The line covers a wide range of applications, including backbone transmission, metro transmission, and data center interconnect.
