Vitesse introduces asynchronous crosspoint switch for optical networking

Aug. 13, 2001
Aug. 13, 2001--Vitesse Semiconductor Corporation announced the addition of the VSC3140 to its crosspoint switch product family.

Vitesse Semiconductor Corporation (NASDAQ:VTSS) announced the addition of the VSC3140 to its crosspoint switch product family.

The VSC3140 is a 144x144 fully non-blocking asynchronous crosspoint switch designed to carry broadband non-return to zero (NRZ) data streams at rates up to 3.6Gb/s. This switch is ideal for designers of SONET-based long haul and metro optical networking equipment such as, digital cross-connect systems (DCS), optical cross-connects (OXC), wavelength routers, as well as storage area network (SAN) switches.

Featuring multiple programming ports (parallel, serial, and a secondary serial port) with multicast, broadcast, and striping programming modes, the VSC3140 enables enhanced architectural design with control programs that are best optimized for individual application requirements. The striping mode enables faster switch programming for 10Gb/s switching applications using 4x2.5Gb/s signals and the 3.6Gb/s data rate capability enables O-E-O switching of 43Gb/s data rates when routed as 12x3.6Gb/s signals.

The VSC3140 incorporates enhancements to Vitesse's proprietary Integrated Signal Equalization (ISE) capability, which eliminates the effects of Inter-Symbol Interference (ISI) that can occur when long, narrow PCB traces are used to route the incoming signal in Clos switch fabrics used OXC and wavelength routing applications. The jitter is reduced to 4ps rms, typical. Using the VSC3140, designers can create a 3-stage Clos switch fabric up to a maximum 10,368 x 10,368 matrix for a total 37Tb/s of data throughput. ISE enables the design of the next generation of large switch fabrics that route 10's of terabits of data traffic by improving the multi-pass performance of the switch, eliminating or reducing the need for inter-stage retimers, and making very large O-E-O switch fabrics cost effective.

These larger crosspoints can be combined with Vitesse's broad offering of SONET/SDH or SAN/WAN products, such as TSI switches (VSC9182, VSC9185), backplane transceivers (VSC7216, VSC7226), retimers, clock and data recovery devices (VSC8124), and our Opto-Analog products to supply a complete end-to-end solution. The VSC3140 is available in a high-performance 45mm 1072 pin BGA package. In quantities of 1,000 units, the VSC3140 is priced at $1,950. Samples are available now, with production volumes slated by February 2002.
