LightPath names CEO

Ken Brizel is the new president and CEO of fiber-optic-component maker LightPath Technologies. He was also elected to the company's board of directors. Brizel's resume includes 21 years' experience in the communications and microelectronics industries, most recently as senior vice president of strategy and business development at Oplink Communications. Before that, he held several posts with Lucent Technologies, Agere Systems, Mostek, Star Semiconductor, RCA, and General Electric.

Optical/electrical-system/component manufacturer Huber+Suhner has named Andrew Paulley general manager. Before joining the company, Paulley established pan-European sales and marketing capabilities for U.S.-based fiber-optic startups. He also spent 15 years with Tyco Electronics (AMP), including five years as regional director of the fiber-optic division, EMEA, responsible for all aspects of the business from marketing to manufacturing.

With "a proven track record for timely realization of new products, from design and development through to qualification and production," Ralph Ahlgren has been appointed vice president of engineering and operations at WaveSplitter Technologies, a supplier of integrated optical com ponents and modules. Ahlgren, who will be responsible for product development and manufacturing, was previously president and chief operating officer of Silicon Evolution, senior vice president of engineering at C Speed, vice president of development engineering and manufacturing operations at Candescent Technologies, and senior director of operations at Read-Rite. He began his career at IBM. Ahlgren "blends the process discipline and rigor of the big-company background with the speed and entrepreneurship essential to the success of small organizations," states Wave Splitter president and CEO Bill Diamond.

In preparation for production ramp-up of its first products, integrated III-V optoelectronic-component supplier Essient Photonics has appointed Ian Croston director of engineering. While at JDS Uniphase, Croston managed the development and deployment of high-performance OC-192 modulator products. He was also product development program leader and quality assurance manager at SDL, directing and coordinating 30 development and process engineers in key modulator development programs, and a development engineer at GEC-Marconi Research Centre, responsible for component developments in technologies such as passive silica-on-silicon, lithium niobate, and indium phosphide.

Richard C. Notebaert has resigned as president, CEO, and director of Tellabs to become CEO of Qwest Communications. Formerly chairman and CEO of Ameritech, Notebaert was Tellabs' president and CEO for less than two years. "I appreciate [Notebaert's] many contributions to the success of the business; I won't say goodbye because I look forward to working with Dick as a customer," notes Tellabs chairman Michael J. Birck, who resumes the roles of CEO and president, positions he relinquished to Notebaert two years ago. Birck is one of six founders who organized Tellabs in 1975 and took the company public in 1980.

Cable & Wireless Japan/Asia CEO Simon Cunningham has been appointed CEO of the Cable & Wireless business in the United States. Cunningham had held the Japan/Asia post since the acquisition of IDC in Japan by Cable & Wireless in 1999 and led the growth and transformation of the business from primarily international voice telephony to a full range of communications services to business customers. The transformation has included the integration in Japan of the acquired assets of Exodus, Digital Island, and PSINet Japan over the last year. Phil Green assumes the role of Cable & Wireless Japan/Asia's CEO. Before that, he was senior vice president of the Network and Systems Group in Cable & Wireless Global's operations unit and CEO of the Cable & Wireless subsidiary in Indonesia, Mitratel.

TeraConnect has named Michael Demeo vice president of sales, responsible for securing design wins and revenue for the company's high-density parallel optic interconnect modules. Demeo has served more than 17 years in high-tech sales, account management, and engineering, including regional sales manager at Agere Systems, director of sales and marketing at OMM, partner and strategic account manager at Universal Technology, sales engineer at IBM Microelectronics, and senior hardware engineer at Raytheon.
