Marvell AtlasOne 50G PAM4 DSP chipset targets 5G RAN requirements

Marvell has introduced the AltasOne 50-Gbps PAM4 DSP within integrated laser driver and IN5662 transimpedance amplifier (TIA) chipset.

Marvell (NASDAQ: MRVL) has introduced the AltasOne 50-Gbps PAM4 DSP within integrated laser driver and IN5662 transimpedance amplifier (TIA) chipset. The devices target emerging 50G 5G fronthaul requirements in integrated radio access networks (RANs), Open RAN (O-RAN), and virtualized RAN (vRAN) architectures.

As 5G RANs evolve toward the use of multilayer MU-MIMO and greater than 200 MHz, network operators will need 50G capabilities in the fronthaul, according to Marvell’s Peter Carson, senior director, solutions marketing at Marvell. The AtlasOne chipset will help transceiver vendors meet this requirement, which will necessitate a transition to the power savings and performance that PAM4 techniques can enable; the AtlasOne DSP enables a 25% savings in power compared to the company’s Polaris device, according to Matt Bolig, product marketing director of networking interconnects at Marvell. Future deployment of ORAN and vRANs also will mean greater bandwidth demand in the fronthaul, Carson and Bolig predicted.

“Fueled by burgeoning 5G adoption and Internet traffic growth, advances in both radio unit capabilities and system architecture are accentuating the importance of high-speed data interconnect, particularly at the edge, where network efficiency and scalability can be greatly enhanced with new virtualized architectures,” commented Stéphane Téral, chief analyst, LightCounting, via a Marvell press release. “With Marvell’s extensive end-to-end RAN experience, its new AtlasOne chipset is well-positioned to become an essential ingredient for the most advanced 5G networks.”
