VI Systems patents 40-Gbps VCSEL

July 24, 2014
Optical components specialist VI Systems GmbH says it has received a Notice of Allowance for a U.S. patent application from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), which means it now has a U.S. patent that covers the material composition of optoelectronic devices that include the company’s 40-Gbps vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL).

The patent, entitled “Optoelectronic Device with a Wide Bandgap and Method of Making Same,” is filed under patent number US 20130092896 A1.

The patented technology can be used to create semiconductor light emitting devices for visible and infra-red spectral ranges. That means that, in addition to optical communications applications, VI Systems is covered for light emitting diodes (LED) targeting the bright red, orange, yellow, or green spectral ranges.

However, VI Systems has focused much of its work on 40-Gbps VCSELs for datacom applications. The company has offered engineering samples of its 850-nm 40-Gbps VCSEL as bare die chips (part number V40-850C) and as fiber-coupled test modules. The modules are available in a package with V-connector but without a VCSEL driver chip (part number V40-850M) or with a built-in 40-Gbps VCSEL driver and adaptor board for differential signal input through standard RF connectors (part number R40-850).
