OZ Optics Ltd. has introduced a high-speed, electrically operated polarization controller (EPC). The EPC provide continuous polarization control in a compact, easy-to-use package, the company asserts.

The unit changes polarization in orthogonal directions via a quartet of birefringence transducers, each controlled by an analog input signal. The response speed of each transducer surpasses 30 kHz, according to OZ Optics. The redundant transducer design enables continuous control of polarization without having to "reset" the voltages. Insertion losses and return losses are near negligible, the company adds.

Users can operate the EPC across wavelengths from 1260 to over 1650 nm. Custom versions for other wavelengths are also available.

Applications include polarization controllers for fiber-optic networks, polarization-dependent loss (PDL) control, polarization-mode dispersion (PMD) compensation modules, and polarization scramblers for polarization parameter characterization systems.

The high-speed polarization controllers come in several forms. These include base modules that require external electrical signals to operate, OEM modules with driver electronics and control interface, and standalone benchtop test instruments.
