II-VI offers 810 mW per port dual 980-nm pump laser
Optical component supplier II‐VI Inc. (NASDAQ:IIVI) says it has made a 2x810-mW, dual 980-nm pump laser module generally available. The device packs two GaAs lasers in a single package to simplify optical amplifier designs and save board space.
The pump laser comes in a 10-pin mini-butterfly package. It consumes less electrical power, generates less heat, and enables significant reductions in the size of high performance, multi-stage optical amplifiers, II-VI says.
"II-VI's 980 nm pump laser technology, now entering its third decade of innovation, continues to meet the evolving needs of the market," said Dr. Sanjai Parthasarathi, vice president, product marketing and strategy, Optical Communications Group at II-VI. "The established, proven building blocks of very high power semiconductor lasers, compact module packaging, and unique, independent dual-laser output designs come together in this new product to minimize the physical size and carbon footprint of optical networking equipment as they continue to be deployed in greater numbers."
II-VI says the new laser modules have completed Telcordia qualification testing and that production is ramping up to serve several customers.
