Agilent Technologies Inc. today added a new high-speed spectral loss measurement system to its test and measurement portfolio that provides a distinctive balance of speed and accuracy, claim company representatives. The system is designed to allow startup manufacturers of passive optical components and subsystems to adopt an easy-to-set-up instrument for superior characterization of wavelength-dependent optical devices in both the R&D and manufacturing environments.

The Agilent N4155A, optimized in speed and accuracy for the production of fiber-Bragg gratings (FBGs), thin film filters (TFFs) and other optical components based on these devices, blends a wavelength accuracy of +/- 1 pm. In addition, the real-time sweep function of Agilent's Photonic Foundation Library included in the N4155A, combined with Agilent's fast power meters and the high-performance tunable laser, gives the most accurate results at the fastest speeds on the market, according to the company.

The Agilent N4155A offers several benefits, including:

* Speed: real-time sweeps for fast alignment and filter testing. Update rates of over one measurement per second can be achieved when testing ultra narrowband components (25 GHz). Interleavers can be fully analyzed over the complete C- or L-bands in less than two seconds.

* Accuracy: absolute wavelength uncertainty of +/- 1.0 pm at a sweep speed of 5 nm/sec.

* Flexibility and scalability: equipment for PDL measurements, additional multiple channels and other kinds of testing equipment can easily be added to the N4155A entry-level set up.

* Return on Investment: the N4155A bundles proven, viable Agilent components, thus providing a cost-effective test solution.

The Agilent N4155A is priced at $61,950 and is shipping now. Further information is available at www.agilent.com/comms/spectralloss.
