OCTOBER 4, 2007 -- JANET(UK), provider of the JANET scientific research network (search for JANET), has again selected TeliaSonera International Carrier (search for Telia) to be one of its IP transit providers for the next two years, providing 4xOC-192 ports, a total of 40 Gbits/sec of capacity, for IP connectivity.

JANET connects the UK's education and research organizations to each other, as well as to the rest of the world through links to the global Internet. The JANET network currently serves over 18 million end-users.

"TeliaSonera International Carrier was awarded the contract based on the quality of its global IP backbone, solid finances, and strong focus on customer service", says Tim Kidd, head of operations at JANET(UK). JANET(UK) is using the TeliaSonera International Carrier IP network as a means of providing Internet access to the many users of the JANET network.

The range of activities facilitated by JANET allows individuals and organizations to push back the traditional boundaries of teaching, learning, and research methods. For example, JANET's videoconferencing and video streaming capabilities are being used to deliver lectures to remote groups of students. For researchers, the high capacity of JANET allows the linking of large data storage and high performance computing facilities at a national and international level.
