DECEMBER 10, 2008 -- Vitesse Semiconductor Corp. says it has extended its VSC8115 SONET/SDH STS-3/12 ,OC-3/12, STM-1/4 Clock and Data Recovery (CDR) device family with higher performance devices designed to deliver superior high-speed timing signals for SONET/SDH-based equipment.

DECEMBER 10, 2008 -- Vitesse Semiconductor Corp. says it has extended its VSC8115 SONET/SDH STS-3/12 ,OC-3/12, STM-1/4 Clock and Data Recovery (CDR) device family with higher performance devices designed to deliver superior high-speed timing signals for SONET/SDH-based equipment.

The new VSC8115-05 and VSC8115-06 are second-generation direct replacements for Vitesse's current VSC8115 family of products. These pin-for-pin and power supply compatible devices offer all the features of the existing device family, while delivering improved design margin, superior jitter transfer, 18% lower power dissipation, and advanced power supply noise rejection, says the company.

The demand for high-performance CDR devices is driven by datacom and telecom transport providers' continuous need to upgrade access and transport equipment to increase capacity, expand reach, and realize cost efficiencies. Increased bandwidth demand is driving large enterprises to upgrade from traditional wire-line services (T1, E1, E3, and DS3) to optical fiber-based OC3/STM1 and OC12/STM4 private lines services, while new network deployments are driving demand in developing markets. New Carrier Ethernet services are also being deployed over existing SONET/SDH-based networks, further driving demand. In addition, thanks to network advances such as GFP and LCAS, Ethernet can be transported efficiently over existing infrastructure, thus extending the life and capacity of installed optical networks.

Vitesse claims the VSC8115 is uniquely capable of meeting SONET/SDH jitter transfer specifications and achieving 0.45UI of jitter tolerance due to superior circuit design techniques. These capabilities allow customers to use a single CDR for 155.52 Mbps and 622.08 Mbps for a host of new applications to support OC3/12 and STM1/4 line cards for add-drop multiplexers, cross-connects, multi-service access platforms, routers, and switches in point-to-point, mesh, and optical ring topologies.

"Vitesse has shipped nearly five million ports of its current generation VSC8115 product to over 75 customers worldwide," reports Tony Conoscenti, vice president, product marketing for Vitesse. "We continue to see high demand for our widely adopted physical layer products in the marketplace. The new generation VSC8115-05 and -06 are ideal for use in existing and future designs and extend the availability of this popular CDR well into the future," he contends. "With the designer's needs in mind, we have developed the VSC8115-05 and -06 as flexible, turn-key solutions that accelerate high-performance functionality and industry-leading jitter design at cost-effective price points needed for today's SONET/SDH compliant applications."

The VSC8115-05 and -06 are engineered in a small-pin-compatible 20-pin TSSOP package to provide the same form, fit, and functions as the VSC8115 first-generation devices. In the absence of a valid signal, the CDR can be locked to the reference clock, providing the downstream device a keep-alive clock signal to reduce the re-locking time. Signal and lock detect status outputs are provided to enable management systems to monitor the incoming signal status and respond accordingly. Both recovered clock and retimed data outputs can be configured as LVDS or LVPECL signals to facilitate a low-jitter and low-power interface.

Capable of generating all clocks from a 19.44-MHz reference frequency LVTTL input, the VSC8115-05 and -06 perform critical clock and data recovery for 622.08-Mbps (STS-12/OC-12/STM-4) or 155.52-Mbps (STS-3/OC-3/STM-1) NRZ data streams, permitting users to design in a single device for both data rates.

The VSC8115-05 is rated for commercial operating temperature ranges, while the VSC8115-06 meets an industrial operating temperature range of -40 ° to + 95 ° C.

The VSC8115-05 and -06 are sampling today both in leaded and lead-free packages for Green/RoHS-compliant designs. In volume quantities, the new part is priced at $7.25 each. The existing VSC8115 will continue to ship in production volumes through 2010, allowing ample time for existing customers to smoothly transition their production systems to the next-generation devices, says Vitesse.
