JUNE 2, 2008 -- Micrel Inc. (search for Micrel) today launched the SY89610L, a Precision Frequency Synthesizer featuring ultra-low jitter.
Micrel says the new device is targeted at the datacom, telecom, server, and storage markets--specifically SONET/SDH, 10-Gigabit Ethernet FEC, 10-Gigabit Ethernet LAN PHY, and add/drop multiplexer applications. The IC is currently available in volume with pricing starting at $12.84 for 1,000 quantities.
"The cost of these kinds of devices can run upwards of $60 each," notes Thomas S. Wong, vice president of High Bandwidth Products for Micrel. "Micrel's new device not only brings the cost down by a factor of nearly five, it also eliminates noise while lowering space requirements," he contends. "Finally, the SY89610L tames jitter by offering output of typically 1ps_rms. Other synthesizers on the market still typically have 40ps_rms jitter," notes Wong.
Micrel explains that the product takes in selected frequency clocks between 19 MHz and 694 MHz and puts out selected frequency with very low jitter. The device input accepts AC- or DC-coupled differential signals such as LVDS, LVPECL, and CML for maximum flexibility. The SY89610L IC has an LC Tank VCO and auto-tune circuit that improves signal performance. It is offered in a space-saving, 32-pin MLF package. Featuring less noise than devices currently on the market, the SY89610L does not require any external components, lowering BOM even further, claim company representatives.
