On Topic: Metro Network Evolution

Dec. 6, 2024

The metro network continues to evolve. As service providers have built out fiber in metro areas, they have offered Ethernet-based data services to businesses and other providers needing to complete out-of-territory service requests. Today, according to Vertical Systems Group, DIA (Dedicated Internet/Cloud Access) is the biggest and fastest-growing U.S. Carrier Ethernet service based on revenue and ports. However, the research group noted that the ongoing migration to other services, including Carrier Managed SD-WAN and SASE, Wavelength services, and Dark Fiber, challenges the growth of the Ethernet market.

The advent of AI is also changing the nature of the metro network. Traditional Tier 1 and competitive providers are stepping up with optical wavelength services and dark fiber. VSG noted that top hyperscalers, financial entities, data centers, media and entertainment companies and cloud provider customers are purchasing 400 Gbps wavelength services. Fiber providers don’t see an immediate demand for 800G wavelength services yet.

In this eBook, we’ll address how service providers and their suppliers are reimagining the metro network to meet new bandwidth and service demands.
