ON TOPIC: Cable’s Fiber to the X Play

Aug. 28, 2024
Cable operators are strategically deploying fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) networks in Greenfield markets and Brownfield markets where existing cable plant has reached its end of life. Leveraging remote OLT platforms, which allow them to address new serving areas from existing or new node locations, many cable operators are building fiber in edge-out projects. Charter has been expanding its fiber broadband network reach using remote optical line terminals (OLTs) in rural and underserved markets. Dell’Oro Group said that in the near term, Tier 1 cable MSOs will continue to focus on upgrading their DOCSIS networks, but the number of their networks overbuilt with fiber will increase over time.

However, regional cable operators Astound Broadband and WOW! are aggressively building out FTTH in their markets. Leveraging the fiber expertise of the combined Grande, RCN and other fiber and cable assets, Astound Broadband has been transitioning its FTTH network from GPON to XGS-PON. Likewise, WOW! is moving ahead with its F T TH plans. With new builds in Florida, Michigan, Minnesota and South Carolina, WOW! is nearing its overall goal of reaching 400,000 homes passed in new markets with fiber broadband by 2027 and expanding its footprint by 21%.

We will address how cable operators enhance their fiber to the x play in this new eBook, which UCL Swift sponsors.
