Sydney Trains to deploy Ciena 6500 Packet-Optical Platform

Aug. 15, 2017
Sydney Trains, an Australian transportation provider, will deploy Ciena's 6500 Packet-Optical Platform as part of its network upgrade initiative. With increased speed, low latency and data network reliability, the upgrade will improve public services across the provider's transportation system, says Ciena.

Sydney Trains, an Australian transportation provider, will deploy Ciena's (NYSE: CIEN) 6500 Packet-Optical Platform as part of its network upgrade initiative. With increased speed, low latency and data network reliability, the upgrade will improve public services across the provider's transportation system, says Ciena.

Sydney Trains has several sites along its network that have varying traffic requirements. Ciena says the flexibility of its packet-optical transport platform will accommodate these end-to-end services and system configurations, including long-distance deployments and fiber types, such as aerial.

The deployment will support important passenger measures necessary for trains to operate at safe distances, and enable Sydney Trains to transition from an SDH legacy network.

"For transportation providers, migrating their communication networks by deploying Packet-optical technologies is key to continually improving safety measures and optimizing passenger services," said Anthony McLachlan, Ciena vice president and general manager, Asia Pacific. "Ciena offers converged packet optical platforms that serve as the foundation for public transport agencies to meet current needs, while enabling them to invest in the infrastructure to deploy future services."

According to Ciena, Sydney Trains is investing in both 100G transport and Optical Transport Network (OTN) switching platforms in an effort to build a network that reinforces customer safety and critical train operations. The upgrade lays a foundation for supporting future high-capacity service requirements.
