Huawei has announced the OptiX OSN 9800 U16, a packet-optical transport system aimed at metro network applications. It features full cross-connection capacities of 5.6 Tbps via a 19U (about 85 cm) sub-rack, the company says.
The OptiX OSN 9800 U16 supports 14 slots, each with a capacity of 400 Gbps. The system is designed to support line-side rates of 100G and 400G now, and eventually 1T or 2T via superchannels. The company envisions a total capacity of more than 8 Tbps per fiber pair. The 5.6-Tbps universal cross-connection capability will accommodate such traffic types as Optical Transport Network (OTN), virtual circuit, and packet in real time. The system also is designed to be compatible with Huawei’s software-defined networking (SDN) initiative (see “Huawei unveils Transport SDN platform and application system”).
"Facing an ocean of data in metropolitan networks, transport pipes must use composite materials that incorporate multiple technologies such as ultra-high-speed WDM, universal cross-connection, and SDN," said Jack Wang, president of Huawei's Transmission Network Product Line. "Only channels with large enough capacity and intelligent management capability can address these growing future requirements. Huawei's OptiX OSN 9800 U16 and OptiX OSN 1800 series constitute a complete metropolitan WDM solution."
The OptiX OSN 1800 series of OTN platform for the metro Huawei introduced in early 2013 (see "Huawei unveils high-capacity metro OTN product").

Want to learn more about packet transport innovation? Attend the Lightwave Optical Innovation Summit
The Lightwave Optical Innovation Summit will feature panels and presentations that will illuminate where optical innovation is required in carrier and enterprise/data center networks, what it should look like, and when it might appear. A wide range of experts from the user, technology development, academic, and analyst communities will offer their views on innovation in a variety of areas, including packet transport. Find out more about the Summit, which will be held in Austin, TX, July 14-16, at the Lightwave Optical Innovation Summit website.
