Apr. 23, 2001--China Netcom Corporation (CNC), a telecommunications carrier in China, announced it has selected Luminous Networks' PacketWave Optical Access Switches for deployment in the major Metropolitan Area Networks in China.

China Netcom Corporation (CNC), a telecommunications carrier in China, announced it has selected Luminous Networks' PacketWave Optical Access Switches for deployment in the major Metropolitan Area Networks in China. Luminous is shipping its carrier-class optical Ethernet platform to CNC, as part of CNC's build-out of a large-scale, high-speed fiber network that encompasses both long-haul and Metropolitan Area Networks. China Netcom will use Luminous' PacketWave optical access switches to deliver services in the Metropolitan Area Access Networks beginning in Shanghai and Guangzhou.

The decision by CNC to deploy Luminous' PacketWave platform follows months of extensive lab and field testing to confirm the capability of Luminous' system to deliver a broad range of carrier-class, packet-based voice, data, and circuit services to CNC's customers. Luminous Networks, based in Cupertino, California, is shipping to CNC the carrier-class optical Ethernet platform for Metropolitan Area Networks. Luminous' systems will enable China Netcom to offer business and residential users data services, paired with voice and circuit services. The Luminous PacketWave provides CNC with service offerings, including transparent LANs (Local Area Networks), voice-over-IP, virtual private network services, and video services.

The relationship between Luminous Networks and China Netcom was facilitated by Luminous' distribution partnership with Photonic Bridges, which is providing network planning, sales and marketing, customer service, deployment, project management, and integration support in China.

Luminous' systems are based on a technology known as Resilient Packet Transport (RPT), an IP-optimized, packet-over-optical solution. RPT provides telecommunications carriers with a scalable, survivable network that supports differentiated data services -- including eight classes of service, transparent LANs, static and dynamic routing -- toll-quality voice and circuit services, as well as protocol independent lambda services, all in a single box. RPT guarantees sub-50 millisecond protection switching in case of ring or node failure, while providing full FCAPS (fault, configuration, accounting, performance, and security) management. Rather than forcing data over a circuit network, Luminous' RPT provides fully synchronous circuits over a stratum-timed network that is optimized for packet traffic.

Luminous Networks' PacketWave optical access switches enable Metropolitan Area Network service providers to offer a rich set of IP and legacy circuit-based services, all on the same network. The Luminous solution enables China Netcom to optimize network performance by handling both Ethernet and T1 traffic on a single platform and to scale as their network grows. PacketWave switches provide the capacity to handle rapidly increasing data loads, and the flexibility to adapt to a variety of applications, without sacrificing system reliability or voice quality.

Luminous' platform delivers intelligent bandwidth management and carrier-class reliability, scales to high speeds of 40 to 80 gigabits per second, and supports static as well as dynamic routing.
