3 September 2003 Pittsburgh, PA Lightwave--Service-edge router provider Laurel Networks today announced that DACOM, one of the leading service providers in South Korea, has selected the ST200 to deliver scalable, QoS-enabled Layer 2 and IP VPN services from the edge of its network.

The ST200 allows DACOM to extend its ATM service across its metropolitan Ethernet access network without sacrificing the high QoS of its existing offering. DACOM is also introducing next-generation Ethernet services delivered with QoS characteristics via the ST200. At the same time, the ST200 will enable DACOM to offer new, scalable IP VPN services without the use of additional devices.

The ST200 supports Layer 2 and IP-based services on a single device. This provides a key advantage to DACOM since fewer devices are required and more services are supported per customer, with the additional flexibility to software-configure new services and speeds as customer needs change.

"For edge routers, Laurel is the clear leader, even for traditional core functions like OSPF/BGP routing throughput," said Mr. Byung Chang Choi, network switching division executive director at DACOM. "And, when it came to putting a range of interfaces in a single platform, Laurel had no peer."

"The IP VPN service takes the flexibility of the Internet and adds to it sophisticated Quality of Service," said Mr. Jung Rae Jun, senior manager of DACOM. "No other technology comes close to MPLS in enabling the VPN capability that makes these services private, flexible, and secure. On top of that, IP VPNs are a means to extend the reach and scalability of legacy Frame Relay and ATM networks, not a replacement for these services."

The ST200 was designed to create profitable data services at the edge of an IP/MPLS backbone network. With a distributed, edge-optimized architecture combining Internet class routing, full port-by-port multi-service capabilities and a sophisticated service management infrastructure, the ST200 delivers services with unmatched performance, scalability and flexibility to support current and future service provider requirements.
