TransPacket adds ultra-fast ring protection to H1 Ethernet transport platform

TransPacket says it has added ultra-fast ring protection capabilities to its H1 line of Ethernet transport platforms. The new feature enables sub-millisecond restoration capabilities for Ethernet-based optical transport networks that previously had been reserved for Optical Transport Network (OTN) infrastructures, the company asserts.

The company introduced its H1 system, based on its FUSION technology, to create highly efficient Ethernet optical transport networks that have some of the attractive features of line and TDM-based infrastructures (see "TransPacket validates performance with Symmetricom").

"The TransPacket ultra-fast ring protection brings Ethernet one step further as a transport protocol for optical networks. In addition to time and synchronization sensitive applications, FUSION empowers Ethernet as a protocol for availability-sensitive applications," explains TransPacket CTO Steinar Bjørnstad.

Service providers have already seen the possibilities of the new capabilities. "The ultra-fast ring protection scheme extends the capability of our wavelength service offering," said Jimmy Persson of Swedish service provider Stadsnätsföreningen (see "Sweden's Stadsnatsforeningen chooses TransPacket systems for wavelength services"). "We can now offer Ethernet-based virtual wavelength services with extremely high availability, addressing a larger customer segment, including broadcasting and utility."
