Telefonica selects Riverstone solutions for broadband deployment
14 November 2002 -- Telefonica de Espana, S.A.U. is to deploy Riverstone's RS family of routers as part of Spain's largest broadband network rollout.
Telefonica de Espana, S.A.U. is Spain's incumbent provider and a subsidiary of the world's fourth largest telecommunications company Telefonica. The nationwide deployment, known as eBA, or e-Broadband Access, will deliver advanced Ethernet services to Telefonica de Espa?a's largest enterprise customers.
The RS 38000 and RS 8600 metro routers will assist in the delivery of "premium" services to its business customers, including bandwidth guarantees, fast recovery times, customised backup resources and advanced multi-protocol label switching (MPLS)-based services.
Telefonica de Espana carefully evaluated a range of solutions and determined that Riverstone's technology best enabled the broadband services that its customers require to compete in a global economy.
"For carriers in Europe and throughout the world, Telefonica de Espana is setting the standard for a new generation of broadband services," said Romulus Pereira, president and CEO of Riverstone Networks. "This is a tremendous validation of our market strategy, technology leadership and vision of global metropolitan networks."
Riverstone's advanced MPLS portfolio enables Telefonica de Espa?a to generate additional revenue through the delivery of next-generation Ethernet services over its existing IP network.
Leveraging Riverstone's technology, Telefonica de Espana will add connection-oriented properties and SONET-like reliability to its Ethernet network to deliver IP virtual private networks (VPNs), virtual private lines and virtual private LAN services. Riverstone's MPLS capabilities also allow Telefonica de Espana to prioritise traffic and guarantee service level agreements.
Riverstone has shipped more than 8,000 MPLS ports to many of the most advanced carriers in the world. With enhanced features that bring greater resiliency to IP networks, Riverstone's MPLS technology increases service assurance and enables carriers to guarantee service levels. Riverstone's MPLS portfolio supports both Layer 2 point-to-point (Martini Draft) and point-to-multipoint (Lasserre-vkompella Draft) tunneling and Layer 3 IP VPNs.
Recent improvements, such as MPLS fast reroute and transparent VPNs, bring greater resiliency to IP networks and reduce the costs associated with creating and delivering services, the company claims.
