Hybrid colocation provider ViaWest announced last week that it should complete the construction of a new data center in Brookwood, OR, just outside of Portland, by the third quarter of the year. The facility, which will feature 138,000 sq. ft. of raised floor space, will be ViaWest's third in the state.
ViaWest touts Oregon as an ideal place for data centers because of its low power costs. The state is third in the nation in renewable energy; ViaWest Oregon is a Gold level partner in the Portland General Electric Clean Wind program. The company says the Brookwood facility will be fed by redundant medium voltage power feeds, backed by an on-site 29-MW generator plant.
The company also says the fact that Oregon does not have a state sales tax and offers tax incentive programs should help draw customers from California and Washington.
As for the facility's other attributes, ViaWest lists several:
- More than 700 W/sq. ft. high density pods will be available
- Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) is projected at below 1.3, among the lowest PUE of any colocation facility, ViaWest asserts
- 18-MW redundant UPS capacity
- High security with 24x7 key card access with secondary biometric authentication, six zone security access
- Dual-standard SSAE 16 and ISAE 3402 Service Organization Control (SOC) 1Type II, SOC 2 Type II, and SOC 3 reports
- Private suites, cages, cabinets, and half cabinets
- 100% uptime service-level agreement for power, bandwidth, and network services
- 100% satisfaction guarantee
- Dedicated, onsite staff of trained engineers.
