GBI signs packet-optical transport systems supply deal with Ciena

Gulf Bridge International (GBI), which operates submarine networks and terrestrial fiber-optic networks to supply connectivity throughout the Middle East and onward to other parts of the world, says it has signed a supply agreement with Ciena Corp. (NYSE: CIEN). The services provider will use elements of Ciena's Converged Packet-Optical Networking portfolio to upgrade its fiber-optic infrastructure.

The upgrades include the addition of 100-Gbps and 200-Gbps capabilities on GBI's undersea cable network. Ciena will supply its 6500 packet-optical transport platforms, which will leverage the company's latest WaveLogic 3 Extreme chipset, as well as GeoMesh submarine network technology and E-Suite integrated packet switching capabilities.

The upgrade is expected to increase GBI's network capacity by twenty-fold, as well as improve the ease of operations, maintenance, and potential future capacity expansions. The new capabilities will strengthen GBI's hand as its customers begin to require more advanced enterprise and wholesale Ethernet services.
