Internexa to deploy Alcatel-Lucent's 100G technology in Peru

Oct. 4, 2012
Internexa, a connectivity provider in South America, says it will deploy 100G optical coherent technology from Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) to boost the speed and capacity of its data network and support the distribution of digital content from around the world into the region. The new fiber-optic network also will enable Internexa to meet subscribers’ fast-growing demands for mobile video, high-speed Internet access, and other data services in Peru.

Internexa claims that it has the largest terrestrial telecommunications network in South America, providing connectivity to operators in Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Chile, Argentina, Brazil and soon, Central America. The company is migrating digital content currently located outside the continent to data centers in Colombia and Brazil through agreements with the main content delivery network (CDN) providers. This move will enhance efficiency for operators and quality of service for subscribers and create new opportunities for content developers, the company says.

As a result, Internexa needed a solution that could manage huge volumes of data traffic and reduce complexity in its network in Peru to provide higher-quality services.

Luis Francisco Gamero, operations director of Internexa Peru said, “With Alcatel-Lucent’s innovative 100G solution, we’re taking a major step to deploy a highly flexible network that will support present and future bandwidth demand with improved performance and allow faster delivery of services to the market. By creating the conditions for a Latin American Internet, we’re building the future for the people in Peru and the rest of the region.”

Alcatel-Lucent is supplying Internexa with its 100G optical coherent technology employed in the 1830 Photonic Service Switch (PSS). In addition, the company will deliver the 1660 SM STM-16/64 Optical Multi-Service Node (OMS) for metro applications, the 1850 Transport Service Switch (TSS) 320, and the 1350 Management Suite.

Designed to address the booming demand for high-bandwidth data services such as high-definition video streaming, Internet applications and cloud services, Alcatel-Lucent claims that its next-generation optical coherent technology based on DWDM offers exceptional performance in existing and new networks.

Osvaldo Di Campli, president of Alcatel-Lucent in the Caribbean and Latin America, said, “This 100G upgrade will dramatically expand the capacity of Internexa’s network, helping ensure the delivery of high-quality services and providing the operator with a flexible platform to expand their capacity to 400G in the future, with minimal investment.”
