Australia Japan Cable submarine network adds Infinera DTN-X

Jan. 14, 2014
Australia Japan Cable (AJC) has deployed the Infinera DTN-X packet optical transport network system on its AJC submarine cable system between Japan and Australia, according to Infinera (NASDAQ: INFN). The newly installed optical transport systems will increase the capacity of the AJC submarine network and enable AJC to support 10, 40, and 100 Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) services, Infinera says.

Australia Japan Cable (AJC) has deployed the Infinera DTN-X packet optical transport system on its AJC submarine cable system between Japan and Australia, according to Infinera (NASDAQ: INFN). The newly installed optical transport systems will increase the capacity of the AJC submarine network and enable AJC to support 10, 40, and 100 Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) services, Infinera says.

The 12,700-km submarine fiber-optic cable network includes landing sites in Australia, Guam, and Japan. The network supports the needs of the AJC consortium, which includes Telstra, AT&T, NTT, Verizon and Softbank. It had previously used equipment from Ciena Corp. to support 40-Gbps wavelengths (see "Australia Japan Cable adds 40-Gbps capabilities via Ciena").

"To meet the growing bandwidth needs of carrier, enterprise, and ISP customers, AJC is significantly increasing the capacity of our network," said Philip Murphy, head of engineering at AJC. "We selected an Infinera Intelligent Transport Network because it allowed us to scale capacity while simplifying operations.”

Infinera says the DTN-X platforms it has provide will support long-haul superchannels with SD-FEC and the ability to support up to 500 Gbps in a single line card. The DTN-X platform is also equipped with 1 Tbps per slot for future requirements.
