Submarine cable specialist TE SubCom, a TE Connectivity Ltd. company, says it has completed the installation of a second subsea fiber-optic cable system that uses coherent transmission and demonstrated 13-Tbps capacity over a distance of 6500 km without any regeneration.
The new system is a pan-Asian submarine network with a longest path of over 6500 km. The system joins TE SubCom’s first coherent system which was approximately 1350 km long (see “TE Subcom demos coherent 100G on transatlantic submarine cable system”). TE Subcom says the two subsea systems demonstrate the next generation in coherent transmission that will enable both today’s capacity needs while being ready for future requirements.
The demonstration combined a specially designed underwater fiber plant with TE SubCom's commercially available coherent C100U line card, which features 100-Gbps operation. This combination provides unique capabilities for the benefit of system operators, the company says.
The C100U line card used Nyquist channel spacing to obtain 300% spectral efficiency, enabling total link capacity of 13 Tbps.
The optical fiber used was optimized for coherent transmission and had over 131,000 ps/nm of dispersion. The C100U line card supports electronic dispersion compensation, which can enable systems up to 12,000 km without any optical compensation in the wet or dry plant.
