T-Mobile Austria tests 400G optical transport with ZTE

ZTE Corp. (0763.HK / 000063.SZ) says its Austrian unit has completed a successful demonstration of 400-Gbps optical transport with Deutsche Telekom's Austrian branch, T-Mobile Austria. The collaborators transmitted 10G, 100G, and 400G (the last via 16QAM) on an existing 475-km fiber-optic network route between Vienna and Graz with no bit-errors, ZTE says.

The demonstration used 10G/100G ZTE optical transport equipment already installed in T-Mobile Austria's network (see "ZTE brings 100 Gbps to T-Mobile Austria fiber-optic backbone"). ZTE installed the trial 400G capabilities last November. The test showed smooth operation of 400-Gbps wavelengths alongside 10-Gbps and 100-Gbps traffic, the systems house adds.

As increasing bandwidth demands lead T-Mobile Austria to deploy 400-Gbps technology, ZTE predicts that software-defined optical modules will enable the straightforward addition of such capacity on long-haul, metro, and other network applications with the appropriate modulation format and characteristics.
