Shenandoah Telecommunications Co. (Shentel; NASDAQ: SHEN) says it has expanded the capabilities of its mid-Atlantic fiber-optic network.

Markets that will see immediate benefit include Cumberland, MD; Morgantown, WV; and Carlisle, Harrisburg, Hershey, Waynesboro, and York, PA. Shentel says that further optical network upgrades are expected this year in Staunton, Lexington, Lynchburg, and Roanoke, VA.

The 100-Gbps capable fiber cable infrastructure supports delivery of a variety of services, including Ethernet, dark fiber, wavelength, and Internet access. Target customers include business, education, healthcare providers, and wireless carriers.

"We are extremely excited about our new network expansion and the opportunity to provide industry-leading solutions to our customers," said Ed McKay, senior vice president of engineering and network planning for Shentel. "We have more than 4,500 fiber route-miles and over 235 cell towers equipped with Shentel-owned fiber throughout Virginia, Maryland, West Virginia, and Pennsylvania. We are committed to providing the most advanced fiber-based services to support the growing data needs of businesses, schools, and local governments throughout the region."

Shentel did not reveal who is supplying the optical transport equipment. However, the company signed a supply agreement with Cisco for 100-Gbps capable systems in 2013 (see "Shentel turns to Cisco for 100-Gbps DWDM technology").
