Telefónica's BRUSA submarine network to link Brazil and the U.S.
Telefónica has revealed plans to deploy an 11,000-km submarine network between Brazil and the United States. The BRUSA undersea cable system will include landing sites at Rio de Janeiro and Fortaleza (Brazil), San Juan (Puerto Rico), Virginia Beach, VA.
The service provider expects the submarine cable system to be operational in early 2018. It will be part of Telefónica's recently announced infrastructure company, Telxius (see "Telefónica spins out infrastructure assets to create Telxius").
Telefónica asserts the undersea fiber-optic network will deliver enhanced reliability and security, as well as low latency. The company will leverage the network to serve wholesale customers and accommodate bandwidth growth between Brazil and the U.S. from business customers, telecom operators, independent content providers, and others.
The company did not reveal its expectations for the system's capacity or who will supply technology and deployment expertise.
