Liberty Global chooses Transmode for European metro 100G networks
International cable network operator Liberty Global is using the TM-Series platform from Transmode to support 100-Gbps capabilities in its European metro and regional networks, the systems house says. The deployments began in the fourth quarter of last year and continued into the first quarter of 2015.
Further deployments also are in the cards, Transmode says. The company says it won the deal due to the platform's small size, low cost, and low power consumption.
"The Metro 100G solution has been deployed in our existing racks with a small footprint and has kept power usage to a minimum," Jan Lindgren, Liberty Global's vice president of network engineering, confirmed. "While we continue to securely move critical traffic in high density areas, we have taken this next step to Metro 100G to ensure we are able to support the ever-growing service bandwidth demands from our customers."
Liberty Global operates in 14 countries through such brands as Virgin Media, UPC, Ziggo, Unitymedia, Kabel BW, Telenet, and VTR. Its operations also include Liberty Global Business Services, its commercial division and Liberty Global Ventures, its investment fund. The company has not revealed the locations where it is deploying Transmode's 100-Gbps optical transport systems.
Transmode has supplied fiber-optic network equipment to Liberty Global companies for some time (see, for example, "upc cablecom chooses Transmode for switched video transport" and "Virgin Media selects Transmode as preferred supplier for metro optical WDM"). The company is currently in the process of being acquired by Infinera (see "Infinera looks to metro with Transmode buy").
