NTT, partners, unveil plans for JUNO trans-Pacific submarine cable network

JUNO will be designed to provide as much as 350 Tbps between Japan and the U.S. The partners expect the submarine cable to be ready for service by the end of 2024.

NTT Ltd. Japan Corp., Mitsui & Co., Ltd., PC Landing Corp., and JA Mitsui Leasing, Ltd. say they will back the deployment and operation of a new trans-Pacific submarine cable network, to be called JUNO. The companies jointly formed Seren Juno Network Co., Ltd. for the purpose. JUNO will be designed to provide as much as 350 Tbps between Japan and the U.S. The partners expect the submarine cable to be ready for service by the end of 2024.

JUNO will run approximately 10,000 km and land in Chiba prefecture and Mie prefecture in Japan and a currently unspecified location in California. The double landing in Japan will add security and resilience in the face of what can be turbulent conditions along the coastal areas of Japan, the companies say.

The undersea cable system will leverage space-division multiplexing (SDM) technology across 20 optical fiber pairs. The transmission technology will enable flexible capacity adaption in response to changes in customer requirements.

Japan Corp. “This new subsea cable is the latest joint effort NTT has led in a long and proud history of providing reliable global internet infrastructure.”
