GlobalConnect runs 600G trial using Nokia PSE-V super coherent optics

Jan. 27, 2022
The field trial saw error-free performance over a 781-km ring with 11 fiber spans and through six colorless/directionless/contentionless/flexible-grid (CDC-F) ROADM nodes.

Nokia says it has assisted network operator GlobalConnect on a demonstration of 600G transmission over a live long-haul network link of GlobalConnect Group’s GO-COLOR network. Leveraging Nokia’s fifth-generation PSE-V Super Coherent DSP (PSE-Vs) loaded in Nokia’s 1830 PSI-M optical transport system, the operator successfully validated a planned upgrade of its long-haul backbone networks.

The field trial saw error-free performance over a 781-km ring with 11 fiber spans and through six colorless/directionless/contentionless/flexible-grid (CDC-F) ROADM nodes. By operating over spectrally efficient 100-GHz WDM channels, GlobalConnect will be able to scale total network capacity 28.8T over the C+ band, Nokia said.

The PSE-Vs implements second-generation probabilistic constellation shaping (PCS) with continuous baud-rate adjustment. According to the company, this enables optical transport systems to support 400G operation over any distance via 100-GHz WDM channels while reducing network costs and power consumption per bit (see “”).

“We are delighted to work with GlobalConnect to support continued capacity evolution of its core networks,” said James Watt, head of optical networks division. “With the introduction of the PSE-Vs super coherent capabilities across our entire 1830 portfolio, Nokia enables spectrally-efficient network capacity upgrades over real-world long-haul networks.”

GlobalConnect operates a network that stretches across the Nordic countries and northern Europe for total of 84,500 km of fiber and 30,000 m² of secure data centers.
