Nokia, Elisa demo 1-Tbps interface in commercial trial
Nokia says it collaborated with Nordic service provider Elisa on a commercial trial of a 1-Tbps clear-channel interface. The trial was part of a network upgrade exercise.
The trial saw Nokia and Elisa upgrade Nokia 7950 Extensible Routing System (XRS) nodes with a linecard featuring a pair of 1-Tbps interfaces. The linecard featured Nokia’s FP4 chipset. In the trial, the linecard enabled terabit transmission by carrying live traffic on Elisa’s network. The demo partners did not reveal the reach of the terabit transmission or any other demonstration parameters.
“Elisa continues its string of world firsts with this record-breaking IP routing capability achieved with Nokia, enabling us to leapfrog an 800G progression that other service providers are only strategizing about,” commented Kalle Lehtinen, CTO, at Elisa. “This strengthens our position as a global 5G leader and gigabit broadband service provider, allowing us to stay ahead of the curve and maintain our commitment to our customers."
“Nokia is honored to have a longstanding partnership with Elisa. Delivering FP4-based 1T ports in the 7950 XRS is a testament to Nokia’s innovation and drive to push the technology envelope, maximizing investments for customers like Elisa,” added Ken Kutzler, vice president of IP routing hardware at Nokia.
Nokia introduced the FP4 chipset for the 7950 XRS and 7750 Service Router in June 2017 (see “Nokia offers new 7750 Service Router, 7950 Extensible Routing System based on multi-terabit FP4 chipset”). In addition to Elisa, the FP4 chipset has found deployment with BT, Equinix, and Proximus, among others (see “BT deploys Nokia 7750 SR-s router platform,” “Equinix to deploy IP/MPLS infrastructure with Nokia FP-4 based routers, Network Services Platform,” and “Proximus deploys Nokia 7750 SR-14s multi-terabit routers as part of TITAN project”).
