ECI offers TM1200 1.2-Tbps dual channel linecard for Apollo DWDM line

ECI has unveiled the TM1200, a 1.2-Tbps (via two 600-Gbps channels) linecard for its Apollo line of DWDM platforms. The blade offers significant spectral efficiency via the ability to change transmission rate in 50-Gbps increments, the company says.

The TM1200 uses what ECI calls “software-controlled continuous modulation” to fine-tune the modulation format and transmission rate for optimal performance at up to 600 Gbps per wavelength. The scheme works effectively in brownfield applications operating on a fixed ITU-T grid as well as in greenfield networks with a mix of fixed and flexible spectrum channel spacing, says ECI. Operators therefore can maximize fiber capacity, operating at the edge of the Shannon Limit, the company adds.

“Optical networks are evolving to be intelligent, agile and self-adjusting, and play an integral role in building the necessary infrastructure to handle the increased demand on global networks. Service providers are looking for networking solutions that can be acutely responsive to evolving customer demands and fluctuating business needs – beyond what they can predict,” said Jimmy Mizrahi, executive vice president, Global Portfolio at ECI. Used in conjunction with the Apollo’s colorless, directionless, contentionless, flexible spectrum capabilities as well as software-defined networking (SDN) control, the line card can continuously optimize transmission and fiber capacity, says ECI. In such scenarios, any excess capacity can be allocated when needed to restore services in the wake of link failure elsewhere in the network. The TM1200 also offers power efficiency, consuming less than 0.18 W per Gbps, fully populated, at 600 Gbps, the company asserts.
