Lucent announces first North American deployment of its next-generation DWDM platform
July 12, 2004 Murray Hill, NJ--Northwest Open Access Network (NoaNet) of Oregon, will be the first North American service provider to use the Metropolis Wavelength Services Manager (WSM) from Lucent.
Following the successful completion of testing later this summer, NoaNet Oregon plans to deploy the Metropolis WSM in its network to bring bandwidth intensive services such as Gigabit Ethernet and broadband Internet access to its customers across the state of Oregon. LightRiver Technologies, an accredited Lucent business partner, will work with NoaNet Oregon to coordinate the trial and manage the installation, deployment and ongoing support of the 1,600-km DWDM optical network.
"Our member companies expect NoaNet Oregon to have the most advanced and reliable technology as the foundation for our network," said Ben Doty, president and chief executive of NoaNet Oregon. "The Metropolis WSM fits the bill, as it will provide a cost-effective way to offer the kinds of services all of our members -- metropolitan and rural -- demand."
The Metropolis WSM is a new DWDM product from Lucent that will help service providers deliver cost-effective optical bandwidth directly to their customers' premises, meeting their wavelength needs in the metro access, interoffice and regional application spaces.
The platform will allow service providers to deliver wavelength services and increase the capacity of their infrastructure. It also enhances the networking flexibility in the service providers' own infrastructure, as well as improving the cost-effectiveness of wavelength services the customer can offer. The modular and flexible architecture of the product reduces costs and complexity through a common optical platform using DWDM and coarse-WDM (CWDM) technologies. Advanced technologies such as plug-n-play, reconfigurable optical add/drop multiplexing (ROADM), and a standards-based control plane also enable customers to offer differentiated services with simplified operations.
The Metropolis WSM, which is generally available now, was jointly developed by Lucent and Movaz Networks and is fully integrated with the broad Lucent optical networking portfolio and will be supported by the Navis Operations Support Systems including Navis Optical Management System and Navis Integrated Network Controller.
