Revamped Fujitsu access platform adds hybrid C/DWDM, SFP/XFP, GbE muxing capabilities
March 22, 2006 Las Vegas, NV -- Fujitsu Network Communications has announced a "significant" new release of its Flashwave 7420 wavelength access platform. The WDM system now incorporates a new optical layer design and a hybrid implementation of both static and dynamic photonic components that the company says will allow carriers to lower the cost of deployment of broadband optical services over "a shared, survivable access infrastructure."
The upgraded 7420 platform is incorporated into the Fujitsu WDM portfolio through a four-year OEM relationship with ADVA Optical Networking. Available in both standard (7RU) and "slimline" (1RU) chassis versions, the carrier-class system multiplexes and provides transport for high-speed voice, video, data and storage applications, while supporting new revenue-generating opportunities for high-speed Ethernet and storage area network (SAN) services. Individual wavelengths can be provisioned with or without protection to offer Quality of Service (QoS) differentiation.
According to Fujitsu, major new features of the upgraded 7420 wavelength access platform include: simultaneous CWDM and DWDM capabilities on a single chassis, as well as migration of services between both technologies; a suite of small form-factor pluggable (SFP) and 10-Gbit/sec small form-factor pluggable (XFP) optics that offer integrated amplification, signal conditioning, embedded communications, and optical protection, in addition to transport services; transmission of 80 protected wavelengths (up from 32 in prior releases) to allow up to 640 separate services to be transported over a single pair of fibers; and support for transmission distances up to 200 km across a single span and new Raman amplification modules that support network distances beyond 1000 km without regeneration.
New management and provisioning functionality includes support for a Generalized Multiprotocol Label Switching (GMPLS) control plane, Generic Framing Procedure (GFP), Optical Transport Network (OTN) aggregation, and G.709 digital wrapper technology. When combined with existing support for an Optical Supervisory Channel (OSC) and an Embedded Communications Channel (ECC), the platform now supports operation and service provisioning capabilities from any node on a network.
Fujitsu's Netsmart 1500 Element Management System that manages existing Flashwave SONET and WDM network elements also manages the upgraded 7420 platform. The new release of the platform is on display this week at Fujitsu's booth at the TelecomNEXT conference and exhibition in Las Vegas.
