Packet-optical equipment supplier Transmode Systems AB says that XO Communications has selected Transmode's TM-Series for metro capacity expansion across the carrier’s nationwide network in North America.

Under the new five-year agreement, Transmode will supply its TM-Series platform to provide XO with broader and more cost-effective metro network functionality. The TM-Series will provide XO Communications with a WDM platform for metro/regional networks capable of carrying 80 channels at speeds of up to 100 Gbps. Initial deployments will support Gigabit Ethernet and 10-Gigabit Ethernet connectivity including WDM muxponders and low-latency transponders. In addition to supporting XO Communications' expansion in Ethernet based services, the TM-Series will also support legacy SONET services.

Transmode will also provide a comprehensive services package, including training, installation, and ongoing technical support. The new deployments with XO Communications will begin immediately.

"As we continue to innovate in our data and IP services portfolio of data on such a large network, we constantly strive for the best and most cost-effective solutions in all areas of our network," said Randy Nicklas, senior vice president and CTO for XO Communications. "Selecting a supplier with the right solutions and vision for the future is important to us, and Transmode's TM-Series is ideally suited to help us continue to expand our metro network capacity."

Paul Harrison, Transmode's VP North America, said, "Our North American business continues to grow and this win is proof of not only the outstanding performance of our solutions, but also the organization we have invested in to serve our customers. Just like Transmode, XO Communications is rapidly growing because it is a competitive alternative to the established players in their industry".
