Huawei Deploys NG-WDM backbone network for Magyar Telekom

6 MAY 2008 -- Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. says it has installed a 2,700-km optical next-generation WDM backbone network for Magyar Telekom in Hungary in just three months.

6 MAY 2008 -- Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. (search for Huawei) says it has installed a 2,700-km optical next-generation WDM backbone network for Magyar Telekom in Hungary in just three months.

The backbone, which covers all of the country including the capital city, Budapest, is based on Huawei's OTN/ASON-based WDM platform and enables Magyar Telekom to migrate from providing traditional voice-oriented services through its previous DWDM system to providing advanced data-oriented services to its customers.

The network has been designed to reduce the capex and opex for the operator while increasing transmission bandwidth to 10 Gbits/sec per channel, which can be quadrupled to 40 Gbits/sec per channel. This means that Magyar Telekom will be able to provide services such as 3G mobile, IPTV, and HDTV to its customers in the future.

Magyar Telekom is the principal provider of telecom services in Hungary. It provides a broad range of services including wireline telephony, data transmission, value-added services, and is Hungary's largest mobile carrier and leading Internet service provider. Magyar Telekom's majority shareholder (59.2%) is Deutsche Telekom AG. Magyar Telekom holds a majority stake in MakTel, the largest telecom operator of Macedonia and in Crnogorski Telekom, Montenegro's largest telecom operator.
