AiDi intros fiber-optic ribbon hermetic feedthrough

SEPTEMBER 19, 2008 -- AiDi Corp. (search for AiDi) says it has advanced current wavelength-switched optical metro and access network technology with its fiber-optic ribbon hermetic feedthrough. According to the company, the innovation is in its ability to use ribbons with large fiber count and manufacture in mass quantities while retaining consistent resilience to the environmental stress conditions defined by Telcordia.

Many advanced optical switch and variable optical attenuator (VOA) technology platforms (MEMS, liquid crystal, polymer, etc.) for wavelength channel switching require encapsulated environments; therefore, the fiber ribbon pigtails must maintain a hermetic seal. For large channel count ribbons, traditional feedthrough assemblies are not robust enough to survive Telcordia environmental qualification. AiDi says it has pioneered the technology for mass production of ribbon feedthroughs with high channel count of 12 or more.

"As the markets for WSS [Wavelength Selective Switch] modules, VOA arrays, advanced multiplexers and demultiplexers, and other modules mature, the demand will grow and deployment will be limited by the ability of manufacturers to produce in adequate volume," notes Kenzo Ishida, president and CEO of AiDi Corp. "This innovation eliminates a potential bottleneck in the overall supply chain and helps enable current and future wavelength-switched optical networks."

In addition, AiDi says it takes complete control of the supply chain from selection of raw materials through to delivery of the final product. The result of this model for customers is more confidence in the product integrity along with very rapid product development cycles, claim company representatives.
