NTT selects Fujitsu 1FINITY Ultra Optical System for IOWN verification
Fujitsu says will supply its 1FINITY Ultra Optical System to Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corp. (NTT) for use as a verification system in trials that will support construction of a new optical core network across Japan. NTT plans to build the fiber network based on Innovative Optical and Wireless Network (IOWN) principles.
NTT, Intel Corp., and Sony Corp. established the IOWN Global Forum in October 2019 to drive the creation of all-photonic networks (APNs) that will meet future communications requirements (see “NTT, Intel, Sony found Innovative Optical and Wireless Network Global Forum”). NTT subsequently partnered with Fujitsu in April 2021 to assist in this effort (see “NTT, Fujitsu to collaborate on photonics, open systems”).
The delivery of the 1FINITY Ultra Optical System, which Fujitsu expects will occur in the first half of fiscal 2023, is the next step of the partnership. The APN NTT and Fujitsu have planned will use photonics in all areas of the network to deliver high-capacity transmission, diminished latency, and low power consumption at levels well beyond conventional communication technologies, Fujitsu says.
Toward this end, the 1FINITY Ultra Optical System will support 1.2-Tbps wavelengths for metro applications and extended reach at 800 Gbps. The optical transport system uses liquid cooling to reduce CO2 emissions by 60% compared to conventional platforms, Fujitsu asserts. The company displayed the system at OFC 2023 this past March in San Diego.
