January 26, 2006 East Granby, CT -- Nufern, an independent manufacturer of fiber intensive sub-assemblies and specialty optical fibers, has introduced a line of fibers designed to address the harsh environmental conditions experienced in communication and sensor applications.

According to the company, the fibers are designed to support a lifespan of 22 years with continuous operation at temperatures as high as 125°C, and to deliver outstanding performance in applications where temperature variations may be large and rapid, and where shock stress and vibration are routine.

"Some of the NuWIRE products are designed to operate with the same service life even in the presence of moderate to high levels of continuous radiation exposure or very high levels of pulsed radiation," adds said Carl Crossland, product marketing manager for Nufern. "The NuWIRE family of fibers was designed to support existing infrastructure, as well as to offer improved performance relating to radiation, optical, and mechanical reliability and enhanced bandwidth for next generation tactical systems."

The NuWIRE family of products consists of both multimode and singlemode fibers. The fibers come with either the company's proprietary High Temperature Acrylate (HTA) silicone or with polyimide coatings. The fibers include radiation resistant multimode fibers (GR50/125-23-HTA, GR62.5/125-27-HTA, GR100/140-24-HTA), radiation resistant singlemode fiber (R1310-HTA), radiation hard singlemode fiber (S1550-HTA), and bend-insensitive singlemode fiber (1310M-HTA and 1550B-HTA).
