SEPTEMBER 10, 2009 -- BTI Systems says that it has been chosen by Cogeco Cable (Cogeco) for a network build out in the Gaspe region of Québec to address requirements for increased network capacity and expand its service offering in the region. Cogeco, the second largest multiservice operator in Ontario, Québec, and Portugal, provides cable distribution, audio, analog and digital television, high-speed Internet, and telephony services.

The Gaspe region deployment is the fourth build out within Cogeco's network to leverage BTI Systems equipment. The platforms deliver multiservice capacity and meet challenging, regional distance requirements (209-km link unrepeatered), according to BTI. Most recently, Cogeco implemented BTI Systems platforms in 2007 to upgrade and build out its Québec regional network linking Montreal, Trois Rivieres, Québec City, and Chicoutimi.

Addressing the communication needs of Québec's consumers, Cogeco needed to deliver multiple OC-48 SONET network connections throughout the Gaspe region. Rather than implement multiple overlaid rings, the carrier decided to leverage BTI's packet optical platform to consolidate SONET connectivity onto a single wavelength, using the 10-port Multiprotocol Muxponder (10-port MXP), and enable a simplified transition to Ethernet-based connectivity for future service opportunities. In addition to the 10-port MXP, the BTI 7000 series provided 10G link reach extension with Dual 10G Multiprotocol Transponders (10G DTPRs) as regenerators at intermediary sites along with amplifiers and dispersion compensation modules.
