SEPTEMBER 9, 2009 -- Comcast Corp. has launched a 100-Mbps high-speed Internet service to businesses in the Minneapolis-St.Paul region of Minnesota, also known as the Twin Cities. The service provider is offering business customers up to 100-Mbps downloads and up to 15-Mbps uploads.
The service is enabled by Comcast's deployment of next-generation DOCSIS 3.0 technology, which sets a new standard for delivering high-speed Internet service across fiber-optic networks. The technology -- also referred to as wideband -- will enable Comcast to continue to deliver progressively faster speeds into the future.
"Internet speeds this fast are a game changer for businesses," says Bill Stemper, president of Comcast Business Services. "When Comcast doubled its Internet speeds last year, business customers immediately took advantage of that wideband pipe to connect regional offices, support remote employees, and perform large file transfers," Stemper adds. "100-Mbps service is ideal for data-intensive businesses that need this kind of speed and want an alternative to slower, more expensive T1 lines."
The 100-Mbps service includes Microsoft Communication Services, a productivity suite that combines Windows SharePoint and Microsoft Outlook e-mail powered by Microsoft Exchange Server for no additional fee. In addition, the service includes McAfee's Security Suite software that protects up to 25 PCs from viruses and spyware. Other web site hosting, design features, and options are also available.
With speeds up to 100 Mbps, customers will be able to download large files (such as a hi-res x-ray or a graphic design, around 2 GB) in about two-and-a-half minutes. To download the same size file on a typical business class 1.5-Mbps T1 line would take more than three hours.
